Why is NBTC certification in Thailand important?

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) regulates the broadcasting and telecommunications industry in Thailand. NBTC licenses and regulates the use of frequencies and radio communications equipment in telecommunications and radio communications services in order to ensure that the users are provided with quality, efficiency, timeliness, reliability and fairness through NBTC’s standards and technical specifications.

What is telecommunications equipment?

Telecommunication means the transmission of information, signals, sounds and messages, or images by wire, radio, optical or electromagnetic systems. Telecommunications equipment is therefore any device that is used for the purposes of transmitting information via these channels. Telecommunications equipment includes telephony, internet, radio and television.

What Is Broadcasting?

In most situations, broadcasting means the transmission of information, audio or video content from diverse sources to the public; for instance, digital television members receive a signal which is broadcast by their TV provider.

Do I need NBTC certification to sell Digital TVs in Thailand?

Short answer: Yes, you need both an NBTC and TISI certificate for digital TVs.

Long answer: The NBTC has regulated the scope of technical standards for digital terrestrial television receivers, which are capable of receiving a digital television signal in the Second Generation Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting System (DVB-T2) in both Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) formats, for both receivers with a display screen (Integrated Digital Television, iDTV) and receivers without a display screen (set-top box).

The NBTC also regulates the scope of technical standards for DVB-S, DVB-S2 for both receivers with a display screen and receivers without a display screen (set-top box), as well as internet set-top boxes.

The type of digital television receiver also covers portable or mobile receivers, vehicle receivers and any other device that is used without relying on the supply mains, either directly connected or through a power adapter.

The bottom line is that legally, it is mandatory to obtain NBTC certification for the digital TV and internet set-top box prior to operation and sale in Thailand.

Does the digital TV or set-top box also need TISI certification?

Yes, if you want to sell these types of products in Thailand, you will also need the TISI certification because they are in the scope of the TISI mandatory standard.
