Cells and Batteries in Accordance with TIS Standard

By the team at Zergo October 28, 2021

As we know Primary battery is a portable voltaic cell that is not rechargeable and the Secondary battery is the rechargeable battery that needs specific use and disposal. By the scope of TIS standard specifies requirements, tests and marking for portable sealed secondary cells and batteries and the below standards are major to use for references:

TIS 2218-2548(2005): Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes – Secondary lithium cells and batteries for portable applications

IEC 61438: Possible safety and health hazards in the use of alkaline secondary cells and batteries – Guide to equipment manufacturers and users

IEC 61951-1: Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes – Portable sealed rechargeable single cells – Part 1: Nickel-cadmium

IEC 61951-2: Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes – Portable sealed rechargeable single cells – Part 2: Nickel-metal hydride

ISO/IEC Guide 51: Safety aspects – Guidelines for their inclusion in standards

What difference do the cell and battery make?

While the secondary cell is a basic manufactured unit that provides a source of electrical energy by direct conversion of chemical energy that consists of electrodes, separators, electrolyte, container and terminals, and that is designed to be charged electrically, the secondary battery is an assembly of the secondary cell(s) ready for use as a source of electrical energy characterized by its voltage, size, terminal arrangement, capacity and rate capability.
The portable cell is a cell intended for assembly in a portable battery, the portable battery is a battery for use in a device or appliance which is conveniently hand-carried, and in Thailand market, this battery is mandatory to get the TISI certification under standard: TIS 2217-2548(2005).
